DEGURBA 3, 2019/2020
In this project I decided to focus on contemporary polish province, showing it through the prism of teenage skateboarders. I grew up in a small town myself and like most of my friends I have left the place of my youth and moved to the big city.
I added myself to the Facebook's group called: „forum of skateboarding” and posted there that I am planning to photograph skateboarders living in the villages. I said that I will not take any pictures of tricks because that would intimidate most of them. Within an hour I had a list of several dozens of youngsters from all around the country keen to cooperate. I was choosing the smallest cottages. Who did I find? Enthusiastic, energized young people trying to change their surroundings up to their needs and not willing to be pigeonholed along with the province stereotypes. They will probably leave to study or work soon. But not yet. Right now, there's skateboarding, youth and discovery.
DEGURBA – Degree of urbanization according to the European Union's classification. It is divided by three degrees: cities (1), small towns and suburban areas (2), villages (3). According to this classification, everyone living in so-called: „degurba 3” is in a difficult life situation.
